Tesla has today dropped the price of a number of its cars across the United States and Europe, including the popular Model 3 and Model Y.
The move comes as Tesla works to try and ensure that it meets its 2023 expectations in terms of cars shipped and after it failed to do so for 2022. The new, lower prices are expected to help drive demand and help Tesla move more cars.
And move cars, these prices might well do. Reuters reports that Tesla has made big changes across the Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles.
The U.S. price cuts on Tesla’s global top-sellers the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover SUV were between 6% and 20%, Reuters calculations showed, with the basic Model Y now costing $52,990, down from $65,990.
Also notable is the fact that these prices are before the $7,500 U.S. federal tax credit that kicked in on January 1 — some of the discounts can now go to around 30% depending on the configuration.
It’s a similar story in European markets, with German driers now able to save as much as 17%.
In Germany, Tesla lopped prices by about 1% to almost 17% on the Model 3 and the Model Y depending on the configuration. The best-selling Model Y will now go for 44,890 euros ($48,499), down 9,100 euros.
In France, Tesla fans will see the price cut move the Model 3 into a new band that brings it in line to receive “a government subsidy of 5,000 euros on an EV scheme with a threshold of 47,000 euros,” Reuters notes.
The new prices are all available in the Tesla configurator now. Tesla also says that anyone still waiting for a car to be delivered will have the price automatically adjusted to match the new, lower one.
