Tesla Could Add AirPlay Support For Better Audio Streaming

Tesla could add Apple AirPlay support to its cars in the future as it tries to ensure that drivers can listen to music at a higher quality than is already available via Bluetooth.

Replying to a question about whether AirPlay support could be added via Twitter, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that he would ask the question of his sound engineers.

He also said that the sound system built into the new Model S and Model X is “incredible,” something that might be true — but doesn’t matter if people can’t get better audio into them.

The original question pointed out that the hardware required for AirPlay support is already built into Tesla cars, suggesting that Tesla would only require a software update to add the feature.

The speaker system in Teslas are so good, but we are limited by the quality of Bluetooth. Could we have AirPlay added? It’s adds the ability for lossless streaming. The hardware necessary is already there.

By adding AirPlay support, Tesla could potentially open the door for lossless audio streaming via a connected iPhone, although it is doubtful whether the in-car experience would make that worthwhile given the larger data transfer requirements over a cellular network.

Whether Telsa will ultimately add support for AirPlay remains to be seen, but features have made their way from Twitter to real cars before so never say never.
