Tesla Announces $20,000 Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit For The Model S Plaid

Anyone who drives a Tesla Model S Plaid seems to complain about the same thing — it’s insanely quick, but the brakes suck. Tesla seems to have agreed with that sentiment, announcing a new Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit for the car, priced at a cool $20,000.

But this being Tesla, you can’t actually get the brakes just yet. Instead, you’re going to be waiting until mid-2022.

Tesla describes the pack as being designed for the “ultimate track experience,” something that while fast, the standard Model S Plaid couldn’t be accused of being.

“Designed for the ultimate track experience, the Model S Plaid Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit is a complete hardware package that delivers maximum, repeatable stopping power during high-performance driving.”

While Tesla doesn’t show much in the way of imagery — what is there to show, really? — it does give us specifications for what the new brake kit will offer. It also notes that the brake kit is only available for the 21-inch Arachnid wheels.

2x 410 x 40mm carbon-silicon carbide front rotors
2x 410 x 32mm carbon-silicon carbide rear rotors
2x 6-piston one-piece, forged front calipers
2x 4-piston one-piece, forged rear calipers
2x integrated, caliper-mounted parking brakes
4x high-performance front brake pads
4x high-performance rear brake pads
1x bottle of high-temperature brake fluid

“The kit includes all-new carbon-silicon carbide rotors that provide maximum high-temperature durability and heat management, one-piece forged calipers with high-performance pads and high-temperature brake fluid.”

If you’re spending the money on a Model S Plaid then there’s an argument to be made that spending an additional $20,000 on brakes that actually work isn’t all that much of an issue. We’re still of the opinion that Tesla should probably just ship brakes that work in the first place, however.
