A newly updated version of the Tesla Android CarPlay Project by developer Michał Gapiński means that more people than ever can now use their iPhone and CarPlay when driving their Tesla.
The new update, which carries version 2022.25.1 offers “100% functional CarPlay integration for any Tesla,” according to the developer.
The project also now supports DRM video playback so you can use apps like Netflix, although you should obviously not do that while driving. The developer also notes that the CarPlay workaround now uses Android 12.1 as its base, meaning that it should be faster and more stable than ever before.
Tesla’s infamously don’t support CarPlay for various reasons, despite having a large display that would be perfect for such a feature. This workaround allows people to launch CarPlay via Tesla’s built-in web browser with this update opening support to all vehicle models for the first time.
You need to really want to use CarPlay in your Tesla to make this a worthwhile situation, though. This method involves using a Raspberry Pi and other accessories to help build the CarPlay experience, something that most people are unlikely to want to have to deal with.
With Apple recently announcing iOS 16 and a future update to CarPlay that will feature support for multiple screens, it seems more and more likely that Tesla will be one of the few not to offer CarPlay while other manufacturers jump on board.
