Geohot’s Limera1n used a userland exploit from Comex to make an untethered jailbreak for all iOS 4.1 devices. While Apple cant patch the original bootrom based Limera1n exploit, the userland exploit though can be patched easily by a firmware upgrade such as iOS 4.2.
iOS 4.1.1 is looming near! The update is set to fix a daylight savings bug in iOS’ alarm clock app that causes alarms to sound an hour early. The update is also set to patch hacker comex’ untethering hack which is used by Geohot’s Limera1n jailbreaking tool for iOS 4.1.
There are rumors flying left and right about Apple releasing the iOS 4.0.2 firmware for iPhones and iPod touches and iOS 3.2.2 for iPad in only a few hours from now. This update will patch the PDF exploit which is used by JailbreaMe to jailbreak all iOS devices. If you accidently update to iOS 4.0.2 / iOS 3.2.2, it will be impossible for you to jailbreak and unlock straight away until a new tool is available. The only way you can jailbreak again will be by downgrading back to iOS 4.0.1 or iOS 4 for which you will need your SHSH blobs.
By now, most of you might have heard rumors about the iOS 4.0.1 firmware update which Apple is preparing to release tomorrow in order to fix the ongoing reception issue on iPhone 4. Even though the issue is most likely related to the hardware, the buzz is that Apple is preparing a software fix in order to avoid (Apple sold 1.5 million iPhone 4s on the first day) what could be the biggest recall in the history of consumer electronics.
TinyUmbrella has been updated to support the new iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 2G/3G. iPad is also supported but iOS 4 for iPad isn't available yet. iPhone 3G is not supported because you don't need to save SHSH blobs for iPhone 3G, and older iPod touch (non MC model).
This is a friendly reminder for all iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPod touch 3G users to save SHSH blobs now before Apple pushes the new iPad 3.3/3.2.1 and iPhone OS 4 firmware today at WWDC 10. This is important if you want to jailbreak (by downgrading) your device again should Apple patches the exploit used by Spirit jailbreak tool.
Since Spirit jailbreak release is on the horizon, it is time to save your SHSH blobs so that you can jailbreak (by downgrading) your device again should Apple release a new firmware once the exploit is public. The following two paragraphs explains what are SHSH blobs and why is it important to save them now.
