As is often the case with technology nowadays, those of you happily sitting on an older software version will soon be coerced into upgrading. The app updates cease supporting you, new software releases aren't compatible with you, or in the case of Apple's Messages beta, they stop working altogether. Prior to Mountain Lion, the Cupertino released a beta version of Messages for Lion, and since that has now evolved into Messages for the latest iteration for OS X, Apple has set a deadline on the demise of that preview.
Carriers have had their customers over a metaphorical barrel for years, with over-priced SMS messages chief amongst the methods that have seen our cellular providers take us to the cleaners on regular occasions. The SMS example is made even more galling when you take into consideration how little data is used by each message.
Facebook is no stranger to controversy, but it usually find itself in hot water thanks to its less than clear privacy policies. In fact, even when their policies are clear people are usually pretty unhappy about what they are being told. Rightly or wrongly, Facebook has something of a reputation for being less than transparent.
