A major update has just been made to Cydia, driving the version number up to 1.1.15 whilst adding a number of fixes largely specific to iOS 8 / 8.1, the new iPhones, and the Pangu8 jailbreak.
As far as jailbreakers are concerned, Cydia is the focal point of the entire experience. The go-to hub for tweaks, themes and other niceties, it's considered the central portal, the nucleus of the entire operation. But as many have begun to discover with this latest Pangu8 untether, Cydia doesn't operate alone, and in actual fact, there are a number of key apps and services driving devices that have been jailbroken. Cydia Substrate, also developed and maintained by Cydia author Saurik, is an essential piece of the jigsaw, and after a couple of major updates already since Pangu arrived ten days ago, version 0.9.5016 brings fixes for jailbreakers running older versions of iOS.
The Pangu8 jailbreak for iOS 8 / 8.1 came as a big surprise for the jailbreak community, but with a lot of complexities as well. One of those complexities was missing Cydia after jailbreaking our devices. Even though Saurik updated Cydia to work with iOS 8 / 8.1, the installation method was completely manual, and still remains so at least as of this writing.
We got the pleasant surprise of an untethered jailbreak for iOS 8 – 8.1, courtesy of Chinese jailbreak outfit Pangu. Getting it up and running has been a bit of a laborious task thus far, with the manual installation of Cydia necessary at this point in time, but that's not the main limitation. Cydia Substrate, support framework for many major tweaks and apps such as WinterBoard, wasn't immediately compatible with the newly-jailbroken iOS 8, but with Cydia author Jay Freeman aka Saurik having made the necessary fixes, Substrate has now been deemed ready for prime time.
Jailbreak king and the man behind Cydia, Jay Freeman, had taken to the web to post a lengthy diatribe about a variety of things ranging from the monetization of Cydia to his own motivations to actually do the work on Cydia in the first place.
Updates to the Cydia app aren't especially frequent, but the substantial length of time between releases allows its developers to pile on the optimizations. Jay Freeman, the creator and maintainer of the alternative App Store for jailbroken devices, has updated Cydia Substrate (formerly Mobile Substrate) to version 0.9.5000. The recently released Evasi0n7 jailbreak managed to take everyone by surprise, including Freeman himself, but today’s news means that the final piece of the jailbreak puzzle is in place, leaving developers free to update their packages and extensions for Apple’s latest 64-bit devices such as the iPhone 5s and iPad Air.
