They grow up so fast! It doesn't seem five minutes since the iTunes App Store was launched, but it just hit the 10 BILLION download mark Apple announced via press release. That's one impressive number!
The very-recently launched Mac App Store has been cracked open for piracy already, reports Gizmodo. The cracked App Store though, dubbed kickback, wont be available before February 2011, according to the Hackulous member Dissident.
The unofficial WikiLeaks app for iPhone and iPad which was only released last week has been removed by Apple from the iTunes App Store.
After Apple relaxed its App Store restrictions, the first of apps that benefitted from this were Google Voice clients (like GV Connect and GV Mobile+) and just now, a BitTorrent-based torrent managing app called IS Drive has been approved for the App Store.
If you haven't been living under a rock or something, you will know about the Google Voice app saga which probably led to increasing tensions between Apple and Google last year. Later, these apps were made available on Cydia for jailbroken iPhones.
iTunes App Store, which was launched back in 2008 with the introduction of iPhone 3G and iPhone software 2.0 (now iOS) has just passed a quarter million apps mark this Friday, with more than 50,000 developers working on them. As of the time of writing this article, the tally stands at 252,227 apps to date. This includes apps for all iOS based devices like iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. If inactive apps are to be counted, then the number of apps go way above 300,000. The Graph below shows the rapid rate at which the App Store is growing.
Founder of Digg Kevin Rose has jumped on to the rumor mill surrounding the next-gen Apple TV (dubbed as iTV). He thinks that this upcoming TV set-top box by Apple will run on top of iOS, which means that it will bring the existing 250,000+ apps from iTunes App Store on the big-screen in your living room. He also thinks that Apple will launch this device as soon as next month and that it “will change everything”.
While there are many third-party iPhone App Stores like Cydia around, the problem with them is that they all require jailbreaking of iPhone, which even though has gone 100 percent legal isn't something which every iPhone user will do. Earning through paid apps for iPhone developers is not new, but earning $1400 USD in a single day through a free app in App Store is nothing less than hitting the jackpot. Jason Ting, a US based iPhone developer shared data on his revenues made using newly launched Apple iAd program. The data showed that he made $1400 on the first day alone for a iPhone 4 utility app that was approved, and released by Apple only yesterday. More astonishing was the astounding $150 eCPM which he got for his app from iAd program.
