Infographics are not only a great way of quickly presenting information about a topic, company or product, but their illustrative form tends to make them very easy on the eye. Status Board for iPad will automatically create a beautiful, insightful and personalized infographic from information found right on your device. This info could take the form of basic apps and activity like tweets, email, weather and news, but with ‘pro’ panels, graphs and tables allowing you to add your very own data sources, Status Board will really help you paint a picture of your entire digital spectrum.
When you open up the app for the very first time, you are presented with six ‘basic’ panels displaying a clock, weather, calendar, mail, Twitter and feeds. While this information looks handsome, the ‘pro’ panels are where Status Board really comes into its own. If, for example, you want to add some custom graphs or tables specific to yourself or your business, all you need to do is provide the app with the HTML, JSON or CSV data source, and it will be automatically added to your running info page.
Once you have decided which panels you would like to include within the UI, then comes the job of customization. Luckily, Status Board is pretty easy to shuffle around to your exact requirements, and with support for both portrait and landscape modes, you have full control regarding how you consume your information.
Third parties have already prepared some great boards for this app, from TubeTracker, which will hook London Underground users up with various tailored information on services, to LastFM, which will show your last played song in widget form.
The one concern for me regarding Status Board is the price tag. It costs $9.99, which, in itself, is a reasonable price for a very well-polished and delightfully unique app, but if you want to view your infographic in all its glory on your TV, you’re going to be charged another ten bucks for the TV-out feature. I know developers place in-app purchases within their creations to continue monetizing after the point of sale, but a further $9.99 – having already charged customers $9.99 for the app in the first place – seems a bit on the steep side.
Irrespective of that minor quibble, Status Board looks sumptuous on the iPad, particularly the third and fourth generation devices with the Retina display.
