SpaceX has announced a new Starlink Roam subscription, a global roaming package that lets people get connectivity essentially anywhere globally.
The new package will cost customers $200 a month, up from the $150 a month that people pay for a regional package.
The Starlink Roam subscription replaces the existing Starlink RV option and is designed for people “traveling to locations where connectivity has been unreliable or completely unavailable.”
Engadget notes that there are limitations on what hardware you can buy the new Starlink Roam subscription with.
Further, if you look at the Starlink website, you’ll see that global roaming is only available with the $599 portable hardware. That’s the service’s terminal that does not provide you with internet connectivity while your vehicle is in motion.
Those who do want to be able o use Starlink while moving will have to buy a $2,500 Flat High Performance Terminal, but that’s only available with the regional subscription that is “geo-fenced to work on land within the same continent as [your] registered shipping address.”
While still being a global service, Starlink Roam isn’t actually available everywhere. The company doesn’t have regulatory approval to provide internet connectivity in some countries including India, Engadget adds. The company has also confirmed that some users might suffer from brief connectivity issues “or none at all” while the company continues to expand its satellite network for true global connectivity.
