South Korea is Samsung’s home country of course, but it won’t be pleased to learn that young people in that part of the world are starting to ditch Android phones in favor of the competition. They’re choosing iPhones, it seems.
According to a new report by Counterpoint Research, 85% of South Koreans under 30 were using Android phones from companies like Samsung as their first smartphones.
However, it’s now thought that the final quarter of last year saw Samsung’s market share in the country fall to 63%, notes 9to5Mac. And that’s just the start.
Counterpoint’s figures show that 53% of the under 30s now own an iPhone and the number of people switching from iPhone to Android in the country is small — just 8%, according to the figures.
Why are people switching? A couple of main reasons, we’re told.
As for the reason for switching from an Android phone to an iPhone, respondents cited “Performance” (32%) and “Brand image” (31%) as the first and second priorities.
Apple has been running marketing aimed squarely at the South Korean market of late, including campaigns that promote the iPhone’s camera capabilities alongside Korean girl group NewJeans and a short film by director Park Chan-wook.
Apple is of course about to announce the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro devices, with all four new models set to be unveiled within the first couple of weeks of September.
