Sony Announces The PS5 Pro With An Eye-Watering Price

After months of rumors and leaks, Sony has today finally taken the wraps off of the PlayStation 5 Pro and it’s definitely worthy of the name. But the price could well be enough to put a whole lot of people off.

Sony announced the new console via a blog post, detailing all of the changes that the new console has to offer including an improved GPU with support for advanced ray tracking and new AI-powered upscaling.

But none of that will matter for a lot of people once they get as far as the price — a whopping $699.99.

First, the good stuff. Sony says that the upgraded GPU “has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory.” The blog post continues, saying “Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.”

Things continue, with advanced ray tracing that “provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light”. We’re told that will allow for rays to be cast at double and sometimes triple the speeds of the current PS5 console, which will make for better performance and nicer-looking games.

Finally, there’s the AI-driven upscaling “that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.” PS5 Pro Game Boost will apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games that can be played on the PS5.

The Pro does not feature a disc drive, but Sony will be selling a 4K Blu-ray disc drive separately.

Sony’s aim is to ensure that PS5 Pro gamers don’t have to choose between performance and image quality, giving theme a console that is powerful to manage both at the same time. Time will tell whether that’s actually going to pan out with preorders beginning on September 26 ahead of a release date on November 7.
