There is no denying that the exchange of small written messages between users through the use of mobile phones is one of the main and most used features on any device. In fact, text messaging is so popular globally that recent reports estimated that a staggering 6.1 trillion text messages are sent annually which equates to a monumental 200,000 messages sent every second.
Unfortunately, with devices like the Apple iPhone, users are extremely limited to what they can do with the default messages application, unless they are using a jailbroken device. The good news is that users of Android devices have a number of options when it comes to text messaging. The Android Market contains apps such as GO SMS, Chomp SMS as well as the native application which comes pre-installed as part of Android. As you might expect, each of those additional third party applications contains its own features and enhancements which users might find appealing.
An Android developer known as Zen Kun has released an application called SMS Enhancer which aims to provide an additional set of features to enhance the stock text messaging experience which are not commonly found in other applications.
One of the main abilities of SMS Enhancer is the option to filter which text messages receive notifications. In most operating systems and applications, the notification feature is a Boolean value and can either be toggled on or off but with SMS Enhancer; the user has the ability to set notifications to occur depending on criteria such as keywords and sender. An auto reply feature is also included within the application which can be sent to reply with a specific reply depending on the same criteria.
The powerful notifications ability doesn’t end there either, with additional options being available to customize the sound, icon, LED and vibration that occurs either on a per contact basis or to set as default. Without a doubt, one of the most appealing features of SMS Enhancer will be the ability to filter pop up notifications based on specific, user defined keywords.
The developer lists the following as the main features of SMS Enhancer:
- Pop up windows on incoming messages
- Quick reply, delete or dismiss of message.
- Quick reply from the pop up notification.
- The ability to read text messages out in speech.
- Reply to messages using the system voice recognition.
- Optional privacy mode to hide sender name and message contents.
Zen Kun has based SMS Enhancer on the SMS Pop Up application by Adam K, but with the addition of aesthetic enhancements as well as adding extra functionality. The application is even open source, and Kun is happy to distribute the source code upon request.
SMS Enhancer is a free of charge app and can be downloaded from the Android Market from the link embedded below.
