If Apple follows its own pattern we can expect it to unveil the iOS 18 software update in June before making it available to the world in September.
Now, a Financial Times report has added more fire to rumors that the update will bring with it notable AI improvements that could see Siri gain ChatGPT-like capabilities.
The feature would likely be built on Apple’s work on Large Language Models similar to those used to create ChatGPT. Using generative AI, Apple’s upgraded Siri would take on new powers that it currently lacks while improving its overall responsiveness.
9to5Mac, which reported on the paywalled Financial Times report, quoted the report as saying that the claims are backed by analysts at Morgan Stanley.
Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, usually held in June, is widely expected to be the event where the company reveals its latest operating system, iOS 18. Morgan Stanley analysts expect the mobile software will be geared towards enabling generative AI and could include its voice assistant Siri being powered by an LLM.
Analysts at SemiAnalasys also believe that Apple’s work on adding more Neural Engine and AI capabilities to its latest chips could be an indication that it is getting ready for upgraded AI capabilities in the future.
Apple is also known to be trying to recruit new engineers with “deep learning” being one term used. That’s a term that describes algorithms that are used to power generative AI such as ChatGPT.
