Siri In iOS 11 To Reportedly Support Integration With More Third-Party App Types

Appl’s 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference, set to kick off next week, should be one of the best in the company’s history. In addition to the usual software announcements and releases, the Cupertino-based company is also expected to make a number of Siri-based announcements.

One of those is said to be regarding the expansion of the digital assistant even further. meaning that even more third-party developers will be able to inject Siri into a growing variety of apps for iPhone and iPad thanks to an improved SiriKit framework.

Anyone with development experience, or experience of using apps with Siri offerings built-in, will know that Apple initially opened Siri up to third-party developers with the release of iOS 10 and the iOS 10 SDK. This allowed those developers to create apps with Siri experiences built directly into the functionality but was somewhat artificially limited by Apple to apps that offered certain functionality. At the time, Apple deemed it only possible for apps in certain categories to offer Siri functionality; ride booking, messaging, photo search, payments, VoIP calling, and fitness.

With the incoming iOS 11 announcement, Apple is expected to not only talk in-depth about Siri, but to also announce that additional categories will be added to that aforementioned list. That would immediately mean that developers could start crafting experiences that would be compatible with devices running iOS 11 when it launches later in the year:

Apple Inc is expected to announce plans next week to make its Siri voice assistant work with a larger variety of apps, as the technology company looks to counter the runaway success of Amazon.com Inc.’s competing Alexa service.

But the Cupertino, California company is likely to stick to its tested method of focusing on a small amount of features and trying to perfect them, rather than casting as wide a net as possible, according to engineers and artificial intelligence industry insiders.

Apple has done an exceptional job of keeping iOS 11 close to its chest. Rather than going into WWDC pretty much knowing everything about the platform, we are instead looking forward to a keynote of discovery to see exactly what the company has in store for the future of the platform. Given the fact that the company is also expected to announce a new Siri-powered speaker, it is highly likely that advancements within Siri will be of high importance during the conference.
