After initially being announced last year only to be delayed, Sega has now confirmed that the Sega Genesis Mini will finally launch in September – September 19th, to be specific.
The console, which is a mini version of the ever-popular Genesis, will go on sale in the United States for $79.99 including a pair of three-button USB controllers. If you’re in Japan, you’ll get a Mega Drive Mini with one six-button Controller for around $60 or if you’d prefer an extra controller in the box, you can pay $80. Sega hasn’t yet released pre-orders. But they’re apparently coming soon.
Beyond the controllers and name, there is one other key difference between the Genesis Mini and Mega Drive Mini – the game library. Sega has already said that the Mega Drive Mini will ship with Castlevania Bloodlines, Comix Zone, Gunstar Heroes, Madou Monogatari Ichi, Powerball, Puyo Puyo 2, Rent-a-Hero, Shining Force, Sonic 2, and Space Harrier II.
Those in the United States picking up a Genesis Mini will get Altered Beast, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Comix Zone, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Ecco the Dolphin, Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force, Sonic The Hedgehog, Space Harrier II, and ToeJam & Earl. However, additional games are still to be announced, so hold fire if your favorite titles are missing.
This announcement comes relatively late considering the likes of Sony and Nintendo have been releasing mini versions of their old consoles for years. The SNES and NES Classic as well as the PlayStation Classic have been well received for the most part, although being unable to add your own games is a concern for a lot of people. If this Sega announcement ticks off your favorite games, we’re sure you’re as excited for some nostalgia as we are.
