Samsung Gear S2 iPhone Compatibility Is Now Official, Coming Later This Year

At the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas today, Samsung has officially confirmed that iPhone compatibility for Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch is coming soon, sometime later this year.

Samsung Gear S2 was announced back in September last year and is powered by Samsung’s own Tizen operating system instead of Google’s Android Wear.

After Google added iOS support to Android Wear around the same time as Gear S2’s announcement, rumors of Gear S2 getting iOS support spread like wildfire, but today, we can finally put all those rumors to rest after Samsung confirmed that Gear S2 will be adding iPhone compatibility later this year.

Currently, Gear S2 smartwatch is compatible with both Samsung’s phones and non-Samsung Android-powered devices. After today’s announcement, it should soon work with iPhones as well.

Apart from this, Samsung has also announced high-end 18-karat Rose Gold and Platinum versions of Gear S2 classic, made from real metals similar to Apple Watch Edition range.

“In 2015, we set a new standard with the Gear S2 in smart wearable category. We broke barriers to introduce one of Samsung’s most progressive wearable devices to date,” said Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “In 2016, we will continue to raise the bar, so that we can deliver products that our customers want most.”

The new Gear S2 classic also features NFC technology to provide Samsung Pay support, similar to how Apple Watch offers support for Apple Pay mobile payment system.

This new Samsung Gear S2 classic, both in Rose Gold and Platinum casing, will be available for purchase sometime in February.
