Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge Off To A Very Underwhelming Start In South Korea

In a world where the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are meant to counter the increasing market share of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the Korean giant’s front runner is not really setting the stage on fire at home as far as sales are concerned. According to a new report, Samsung is looking at just 20,000 units sold per day since the phone was released.

When the phone went up for pre-order in South Korea through various carriers, it was reported that the units ordered amounted to around 300,000. However, according to Yonhap News Agency, Samsung has managed to sell just “a little over 200,000” units of the S6 and S6 Edge between the 10th and 20th of April, a figure significantly below what an earlier report had cited.

According to the publication, these listless sales could be a result of low carrier subsidies being offered. The report suggests that while the country’s law prohibits carriers from subsidizing handsets by more than 330,000 won, subsidies for the Galaxy S6 lineup did not exceed 210,000 won ($194) until recently. According to Yonhap, an increase in carrier subsidy will likely see the rise in sales of the handset in the country. Yonhap quotes a retailer saying that, “We expect sales will improve soon, as the mobile carriers decided to increase subsidies on the Galaxy S6 series.”

The Galaxy S6 was possibly one of the most anticipated smartphone after the iPhone 6, and fans and non-fans alike were looking at Samsung to really crawl out of its skin to release a Galaxy S phone unlike anything the company has released before.

Of course, Samsung is yet to release the official sales figure, and it is believed that the handset did much better abroad, with the company having received some 20 million pre-orders from carriers across the globe, though this total is nothing close to what the actual sales to consumers reflect.
