Samsung has used its Kapture The Moment event at The Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore to introduce its second camera-focused smartphone.
The Galaxy K Zoom was unveiled at the event yesterday and can be thought of as a camera centric version of the recently launched and more mainstream Galaxy S5. The South Korean company has proved over the years that it’s more than willing to experiment with innovative designs and functionality within its devices. The Galaxy K Zoom is yet another example of that desire to fuse together features from popular consumer electronic devices, following up on the previous Galaxy S4 Zoom that offered similar functionality.
Features and Specs:
For those who may be struggling to understand what the Galaxy K Zoom actually is, it’s relatively simple; Samsung has essentially taken the form factor of the well-received Galaxy S5, grabbed a powerful digital camera and fused the two together to make this latest crazy offering.
The external aesthetics of the device won’t come as a surprise to anyone. Samsung’s current Android flagship, the Galaxy S5, has captured the affections of users due to its form so it makes perfect sense for the company to continue down that design path.
Those interested in a hybrid smartphone camera like the Galaxy K Zoom can expect to purchase a piece of hardware that ships with a 20.7-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor with an accompanying Xenon flash for low-light conditions and 10x optical zoom. Images taken in low-light are also boosted by the inclusion of an optical image stabilizer (OIS) system that further increases the power of the K Zoom’s camera capabilities. Samsung has also had the foresight to bundle in some advanced functionality with the camera, including Auto Focus and Auto Exposure Separation as well as multiple filter settings and a timer that will allow users to capture the perfect duck-faced selfie.
The smartphone aspect of the device provides an equally compelling reason to take a second glance. The phone will ship with Android 4.4 KitKat as well as a quad-core 1.3GHz and dual-core 1.7GHz processor system. The K Zoom comes equipped with 2GB of RAM as well as an internal storage capacity of 8GB, expandable up to the usual 64GB through the use of microSD cards.
Price and Release Date:
At the time of writing Samsung hadn’t announced any pricing or availability tiers. It’s likely that the popularity of such devices in Asian and European markets will mean that US residents will never see the K Zoom landing on American shelves.
