Samsung Could Launch A Rollable Phone Later This Year

Samsung is already at the forefront of the world of foldable phones but it could be set to move onto something new later this year. A new leak now suggests that Samsung will release a rollable phone before the end of this year.

The rollable device would be the first from Samsung but we’ve seen similar concepts and ideas from other companies in the past.

This particular leak comes via @UniversIce on Twitter, someone who has proven accurate when releasing Samsung leaks and rumors before now. According to them, the rollable will arrive “in the second half of the year” and the product currently carries the “diamond” codename.

Where rollable devices differ from foldable is in one key area. Because the device is rolled up rather than folded, the crease that’s common with foldable devices isn’t there which makes for a better experience when opened up.

As much as the foldable creases have gotten better in recent years, they’re still very much there. Removing that crease is something device makers need to work on — and rolling rather than folding is one way to do it.

Oppo and others have already talked about similar devices and Apple has its own patents that could point to a rollable iPhone in the future. For now, we’d just settle for some sort of foldable iPhone before too long.
