Apple’s original iPhone launched on June 29, 2007, which means that it is now having its 15th birthday. That’s a long time and the Wall Street Journal has a new documentary out that looks into what the launch was like, and beyond.
As part of that documentary, Apple marketing chief Greg Joswiak says that Samsung was “annoying” and that it “just put a bigger screen” on Apple’s technology.
The full documentary is a great insight into the iPhone story, but it’s that quote that will stick out for many. Apple famously sued Samsung back in 2011, claiming that it infringed upon its patents. That whole thing trundled on for years and was only settled in 2018, and even then, Apple wasn’t happy about what it feels was Samsung blatantly copying its designs.
We believe deeply in the value of design, and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers. This case has always been about more than money. Apple ignited the smartphone revolution with iPhone and it is a fact that Samsung blatantly copied our design. It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innovation of so many people at Apple.
That’s a sentiment backed up by Joswiak, with the exec saying that Samsung was “annoying because, as you know, they ripped off our technology. They took the innovations that we had created and created a poor copy of it, and just put a bigger screen around it. So, yeah, we were none too pleased.”
