Apple’s rumored iPhone 14 launch is set for next week and it sounds like we might have been calling at least one model by the wrong name for months.
The 6.7-inch non-Pro iPhone was expected to be called iPhone 14 Max, but it now sounds like that might not be the case at all. Instead, it appears that iPhone 14 Plus is the way to go.
The news comes after an image was posted to Twitter claiming to show an iPhone 14 Plus case, something that would obviously mean the previous name was wrong. It would also mean a return of the Plus branding after some time away — the last model was 2017’s iPhone 8 Plus, with Apple using Max ever since.
To back the photo up, 9to5Mac also reports that it has heard the same thing — iPhone 14 Plus, not iPhone 15 Max.
9to5Mac sources can confirm that the new iPhone 14 will indeed be named Plus and not Max, as some have pointed out.
Sources familiar with the matter say Apple has chosen to name the next larger iPhone, the iPhone 14 Plus. In addition, at least since July, iPhone case makers have been told to not use the brand iPhone 14 Max, as it won’t be the actual name of the product.
Apple is set to announce all of the new iPhones during its September 7 event, with expectation high that four new handsets will also be joined by three new Apple Watches, including Apple Watch Pro — a model with a larger screen than any Apple Watch to date.
