A new report claims that Samsung’s Galaxy S8 will feature an edge-to-edge bezel-less display that will be very similar to the that of rumored iPhone 8.
With both Apple and Samsung getting ready to ramp up work on their next big flagship smartphone releases, it is looking increasingly likely that iPhone 8 and Galaxy S8 will be very similar in some important ways. Report by Bloomberg, citing sources who are said to be directly familiar with the product, claims that Samsung’s Galaxy S8 will sport a display akin to recently released ‘concept’ phone Mi Mix, and Apple’s next iPhone. Apple’s upcoming handset is said to have a similarly bezel-free screen with no Home button to speak of.
The similarities don’t end there, either. Samsung has already used AMOLED screens in its devices and while Bloomberg reports that OLED will be used next time around, it is possible that wires are being crossed somewhere and that AMOLED will once again make a return.
Whichever flavor of OLED is used, Apple’s is also said to be lining up OLED manufacturers for the iPhone 8’s screen. This would be the first iPhone to use an OLED display rather than the more traditional LCD, though the former is not completely alien to the company with the Apple Watch using OLED technology for its admittedly small screen.
Both the Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7 smartphones have Home buttons that are very visible on the front of the device, but next year’s upgrades may be about to remove that button on both sides of the fence. Buttons embedded into the iPhone 8 and Galaxy S8’s screens look like a distinct possibility for 2017, giving both devices a clean, all-screen look that will make this year’s devices immediately look dated.
Just a few months after the iPhone 7’s release and with even less time having passed since Samsung went through its Galaxy Note 7 recall debacle, which is sure to have altered plans for the Galaxy S8, all of these rumors are exactly that – rumors. We will learn more of Samsung and Apple’s plans in the coming months, but as of right now, it appears clear that both devices will be strikingly similar.
Is that a bad thing? Not in our eyes. After all, if there’s one thing better than a stunning phone on the 2017 roster, it’s two stunning phones.
