Rumor: iPhone 8 To Have One OLED And Two LCD Models

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has been at it again, this time claiming that iPhone 8 will actually come in three variants, with both LCD and OLED technology being used across the three different devices.

According to Kuo, Apple has two LCD iPhones in the works. One will be 4.7-inches in size with a single camera lens as is currently the situation with the iPhone 7, and the other being a 5.5-inch dual-lens solution, just like the iPhone 7 Plus. That is perhaps not the interesting part of Kuo’s story though, with an all-new OLED display also reported to be on the cards, although no word has yet appeared as to what size that screen will be.

It’s possible it will be larger than 4.7-inches however, with Kuo believing that the device will feature not just one, but two cameras. That alone has us thinking Plus rather than standard size.

We look for new 2017F iPhones to come in three models: one OLED model, and two TFT-LCD models with 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch display. We believe the OLED and 5.5-inch TFT-LCD iPhones will feature dual-camera. Based on this prediction, our forecast of dual camera adoption rate in new 2017F iPhone models is revised up from 30-40% to 65-75%.

He continued:

We view this increase as favoring Largan’s sales and profit momentum as it is the exclusive supplier of wide-angle and telephoto lens. It also bodes well for Apple’s dual camera software ecosystem.

Japanese publication Nikkei has also reported that Apple will sell three new models of iPhone next year, but all with differing screen sizes. According to that report, a 4.7-inch, 5-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone are incoming in 2017. Give each the same color options as the iPhone 7 and that’s a lot of different SKUs.

Given Apple’s current fondness for muddying its product lines, that sounds entirely feasible to us.
