A new rumor / report by Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities claims that Apple’s next iPhone, believed to be dubbed the iPhone 8, will feature a design that uses glass for both its front and rear construction, similar to the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s.
It is believed that the move to a glass construction would allow for a fit and finish similar to that of the Jet Black iPhone 7, but without the durability issues that come with it. Those who bought a Jet Black iPhone 7 are recommended to keep it in a case due to the likelihood of micro abrasions, for example.
KGI Securities believes that as many as 50% of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus preorders were for the Jet Black offering, suggesting demand is indeed there for a black, rather than silver or gray color scheme. A glass construction with, according to Kuo, an aluminium or stainless steel element to the design (where stainless steel might be reserved for premium models) would allow Apple to make a clean, fresh-looking iPhone without making it susceptible to scratches.
The only problem with glass iPhones, as anyone with an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s can likely attest, is breakage.
To that point, Apple is believed to be getting ready to use 2.5D glass rather than the standard 3D glass for the iPhone 8 construction. It is this choice of glass that would apparently make the device less likely to break during a fall – something the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s were particularly susceptible to given their glass-clad front and rear.
Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 8 in September of next year in order to celebrate the iPhone’s 10th anniversary. A redesigned body is almost guaranteed at this point, as is the iPhone 8 moniker rather than the iPhone 7s name that would normally follow the iPhone 7.
2017 could well be the biggest iPhone year since the original.
