The iPhone 6s camera specs are likely to get bumped up when the phone is released this September. Apple has been sticking to the 8MP standard since 2011, but has lately been under tremendous pressure from consumers and the competition to increase the megapixels on its iSight shooter.
While it’s evident that a higher megapixel count on a camera does not translate into better quality photos, Apple will eventually have to keep up with the building hype which trends around the count of the megapixels in a smartphone’s camera. A new report coming in from Kevin Wang, IHS Technology Research Director in China, suggests that the team at Cupertino is looking to pack in a 12MP module on the next iPhone.
Now given how Apple has managed to extract some exceptional results using a mere 8MP module for its smartphones’ camera, there’s reason to believe that this upgrade should theoretically really improve the quality of the photos. However, Wang believes that a lot more would also change in addition to the 12MP module. Apparently, Apple could be looking to reduce the pixel size on this new generation of camera compared to the older ones, where larger pixels help in reducing noise and improve images in low-light situations, something the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus already handle pretty nicely. I think it’s safe to assume that unless Apple manages to retain this low-light quality, it won’t be looking to shrink the pixel size just yet.
The September-bound iPhone’s camera has been subject of much debate since the start of 2015, with rumors going around that Apple’s next smartphone would not only sport a dual-lens setup but optical zoom as well while churning out DSLR-like photos. These rumors though were quickly regarded as a bit far-fetched, but an increase in pixels is very likely now.
Just a few days back, a similar report touting the iPhone 6s to be carrying a 12MP camera was revealed by our trusted analyst from KGI Securities, Ming-Chi Kuo as well. The report also carried some further details on the rest of the hardware, such as reports about Force Touch tech being employed, and the addition of a rose gold color scheme among other changes.
