Those who just can’t wait for Apple to announce something new may not have to wait too long, assuming your definition of long stretches further than March of next year. A new report has Apple planning a media event for March 2016, with a new Apple Watch and the 4-inch iPhone 6c set to be the big announcements. Apple held a media event during the same month this year, with the Apple Watch being shown off in more concrete form for the first time and the 12-inch MacBook making its debut.
If Apple does announce a new Apple Watch in March, then it will see the device receive its first annual update, with March 2015 having seen the device fleshed out following an announcement late in 2014, although the device did not become available to purchase until the following April. Sources speaking to 9to5Mac claim that 2016 will see a similar release cadence, with the new Apple Watch announced in March but then going on sale a month later, hopefully, with a little less shipping chaos than 2015’s launch. At this point, it is unknown what the next Apple Watch will be capable of, though previous reports had Apple already working on the hardware before the current Apple Watch even went on sale.
The other half of the announcement is likely to be for the iPhone 6c, Apple’s replacement for the iPhone 5c that currently sits at the bottom of its iPhone pyramid. Keeping the 4-inch screen of the existing ‘c’ designated device, the iPhone 6c will likely be available in a range of colors wrapped in a metal body and is expected to feature specs ranging between those of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6s rather than simply being a scaled down iPhone 6.
The use of some iPhone 6s parts for the iPhone 6c would suggest that Apple is keen to continue offering a 4-inch device without having it use old technology under the hood. The iPhone 5c has been getting a little long in the tooth for a while now, and the iPhone 6c looks set to offer a significant performance boost with A9 CPU, along with support for Apple Pay, should it be announced as expected in March.
If Apple does indeed use the month of March to announce a new iPhone and Apple Watch, it could be a sign that the company is settling into a pattern of Apple Watch announcements in the first half of the year, with iPad and iPhone coming in the second. Add WWDC to the mix somewhere in the middle, and Apple’s 2016 is starting to look pretty busy already.
