Roku has today started to roll out full AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to its devices, although not all. The features have been a long time coming, but they should be on your devices very soon if they aren’t already.
As noted by The Verge, most devices will be getting the update required to make AirPlay 2 and HomeKit work, although those with TVs might have to wait a little while longer while everything gets set up and installed on their model.
Both will be available for the majority of the company’s 4K players, “including the Roku Ultra, Roku Streambar, Roku Smart Soundbar, Roku Streaming Stick Plus, and Roku Premiere.” 4K-ready Roku TVs will also be updated to support AirPlay 2 and HomeKit “in phases over the coming weeks” via the RokuOS 9.4 update.
The addition of AirPlay 2 support will allow users to throw audio and video from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac and have it played via their Roku device. The HomeKit support is just as interesting, with users able to control their devices using their voice via Siri.
The possibilities afforded by the updates are numerous, including three specific examples provided via Roku’s announcement.
- Share photos from your camera roll directly to your TV.
- Join your next Zoom happy hour or holiday party from the comfort of your couch.
- Listen to your favorite podcast or enjoy music from any room in your home.
If you aren’t seeing the update yet, try updating. You’re looking for OS 9.4 or later.
