As time ticks on and we begin to edge closer to September 2017 – yes, we’re still quite a way off yet – rumors of what the supposed iPhone 8 will look like and be made of have already begun to gather a pace.
Whilst we don’t know exactly what we will be lining up for next year, we do know that it is likely to feature a lot of glass in its construction, and that the screen is likely to feature an OLED panel depending on the model of iPhone bought. Now The Wall Street Journal has also begun to lend credence to the rumors of a new screen technology being used next time around too, with the report suggesting OLED is at least being worked on by Apple.
According to the report, a new OLED screen could be included in new iPhones from next year, with the potential for multiple models featuring the technology. As is perhaps to be expected though, those models with an OLED screen will likely cost more to buy than those with a more traditional, LCD screen.
Apple is said to be working on a many as ten different prototypes for the next iPhone which may explain the varying reports on what it may or may not be constructed of.
The company is believed to want to be able to offer a radically redesigned iPhone in 2017 in order to celebrate the smartphone’s tenth birthday whilst also bringing the first externally redesigned iPhone to market since the iPhone 6 launched in 2014.
Samsung, perhaps the biggest competitor to Apple in the smartphone space, is penciled in to be the provider for any OLED screen that may make its way into an iPhone initially, but Apple hopes to have LG Display, Japan Display, and Sharp ready for 2018 given the sheer number of OLED panels that will be needed to be pushed out to keep up with the demand.
