Report Claims New 27-Inch iMac Won’t Use mini-LED Display Despite Rumors

Apple’s rumored 27-inch iMac refresh will not feature mini-LED technology, according to a new report. That’s despite previous rumors that suggested the opposite. Instead, the new DigiTimes report says, the new iMac will feature an LCD display.

The report notes that “speculation about the next-generation 27-inch ‌iMac‌ coming with a mini-LED display” has been around for a while, but goes on to say that isn’t accurate.

The sources pointed out that speculation about the next-generation 27-inch iMac coming with a miniLED display has been circulating in the market ever since the 24-inch iMac received a major upgrade in the CPU platform earlier this year, but the shipments of the 27-inch device in December showed that it is still equipped with a traditional LCD display

Rumors of a 27-inch mini-LED screen have been commonplace with display analyst Ross Young the most vocal of those saying that the new tech will be part of the larger iMac’s refresh. That would allow for improved brightness as well as ProMotion 120Hz support.

Apple is rumored to be launching the refreshed 27-inch iMac in the first half of 2022, with DigiTimes also reporting noting that multiple colors will be offered just like the 24-inch version.

A new Apple silicon-powered iMac Pro could still be in the works as well — maybe that’s where the new ProMotion display will make an appearance.
