Report Claims Apple’s Rumored Mixed Reality Headset Has Been Shown To The Board Ahead Of Announcement

Apple has long been rumored to be working on a new mixed reality headset and now it seems that the project is at such an advanced stage that the company has shown it off to board members.

According to a new Bloomberg report, Apple showed members of its board a version of the mixed reality headset, potentially signaling that it is readying announcement. Previous rumors had that taking place later this year, although it’s also thought that overheating issues could have put paid to that.

Apple Inc. executives previewed its upcoming mixed-reality headset to the company’s board last week, indicating that development of the device has reached an advanced stage, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The company’s board, made up of eight independent directors and Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook, convenes at least four times a year. A version of the device was demonstrated to the directors during the latest gathering, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the meeting was private.

The headset is expected to use Apple silicon chips similar to those that power the company’s high-end Macs, perhaps explaining the overheating issues we have heard about.

The new headset will use a combination of virtual and augmented reality and is set to make use of multiple displays to give users an image to look at. The same Bloomberg report notes that Apple has recently been increasing development efforts on rOS, the Reality Operating System that will power the new device.

Expectations for the new product are high, with Bloomberg expecting it to be the biggest product launch since the Apple Watch arrived in 2015. While it was initially hoped that Apple could show the device off during next month’s WWDC opening keynote, that now seems unlikely.
