Apple looks set to kill off 3D Touch four years after it arrived as part of the iPhone 6s announcement. The feature, allowing users to press on the iPhone’s screen firmly to access additional features, will not be part of the 2019 iPhone lineup according to a new report.
The report comes via a Barclays research note which MacRumors has seen, and corroborates a similar report from The Wall Street Journal earlier this year, and also serves as a confirmation of an earlier note on the matter from Barclays.
The belief is that Apple will nix 3D Touch in favor of using the same Haptic Touch feature that it released with the iPhone XR last year.
The use of Haptic Touch rather than 3D Touch for the iPhone XR was said to be related to the bezel-free LCD screen that was used, but that isn’t an issue with the OLED panels used in the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. However, reports now have Apple moving all of its iPhones to Haptic Touch in lieu of 3D Touch, despite the fact that it works in fewer places throughout iOS.
With Apple set to announce iOS 13 at WWDC on June 3rd it’s possible that we will see changes made to the system and apps that allow Haptic Touch to be used in the same way as the current 3D Touch feature. If that’s the case then there may be no downside to this move, despite it appearing to be a backward step on the surface.
We’ll be taking iOS 13 for a spin as soon as we can, so we’ll see how that pans out. We also expect the 2019 iPhones to be announced this coming September, too.
