Report: 2020 iPad Pro May Feature ToF 3D Sensing Rear Cameras

Apple has been rumored to have a new iPad Pro refresh in the works for weeks now, and according to Korean site The Elec, it will arrive in March of 2020. The new tablets will also include a 3D sensing camera, the report claims.

Citing unnamed sources, the outlet believes that Derkwoo Electronics will be the company tasked with producing some of the components required to produce the 3D sensing camera modules. However, mass production of those parts isn’t expected until the end of this year, which means we shouldn’t expect a launch just yet.

That 3D sensing tech will make use of time-of-flight technology, which is something that has been rumored for iPhone updates for years. The technology measures how long it takes for light to bounce of objects, allowing for a more accurate representation of distances.

While the 2019 iPhone won’t get the same technology, the report does suggest that we can expect time-of-flight capabilities to arrive in the 2020 iPhone towards the end of that year. This all also ties in well with a previous Bloomberg report that had the same technology appearing in the iPad Pro before making its way to the iPhone.

However, the thought of the iPad Pro not receiving an update until March is an interesting one. By then, the current lineup will be 18 months old, which is a long time for Apple’s premium tablet to go without a refresh, especially considering the arrival of iPadOS 13 and all of its multitasking bells and whistles next month.

What this may show is just how overpowered the 2018 iPad Pro was when it was released, being the powerhouse we know that it is.
