An updated Tesla Model 3 has been spotted in prototype form, with the new car sporting upgraded wheels.
Electrek reports that there were rumors and leaks of a new Model 3 swirling last year, with the project to update the look being called Highland. It’s possible that is what we’re looking at here, although it’s difficult to be sure.
It’s also difficult to get a proper feel for what the front of the car looks like thanks to covers placed over the hood, bumper, and lights. But those wheels are hard to miss.
It’s been suggested that the new wheels are 18-inch aero wheels with their cap removed.
Unlike Tesla’s current aero wheel design, the spokes come into the center at different angles. If the wheel itself has changed, it’s likely that Tesla also changed the design of the aero caps, but those haven’t been spotted yet.
It’s impossible to know at this point when the upgraded Model 3 will begin shipping to customers, but it’s notable that moving to this design could prove problematic. Electrek notes that switching the design now could slow manufacturing for a while, something that Tesla is unlikely to want to do at a time when it still can’t build these things fast enough.
As for when the new look will be officially confirmed, it’s thought that next week’s Investor Day is a good bet although we’ll have to wait and find out.
