The Sony PS5 has been jailbroken, but the jailbreak is so limited that it is pretty pointless as of right now.
The jailbreak has been shown off by modder Lance McDonald, someone famous for releasing an unofficial Bloodborne patch that made it run at 60fps on a PS4.
The jailbreak isn’t his creation, however, but he has shown the hack running on a PS5. However, the jailbreak is extremely limited — it can’t be performed on PS5 hardware running anything newer than the 4.03 software, for starters. That was replaced by 4.50 in December of 2021, so it’s unlikely that most people have a console with that software installed anyway.
Even if they do, the jailbreak can’t do much. While it will give people access to read and write capabilities, nothing can be executed. McDonald has shown off the installation of a game demo, but he can’t run it with the current state of the jailbreak.
What’s more, we’re told that installation of the jailbreak only completes successfully around 30% of the time, meaning it will take a few goes before it works.
As VGC’s report notes, this jailbreak isn’t likely to be a huge deal for most.
Given the limitations of the alleged exploit and the fact it only works on a specific, year-old firmware version, it will currently likely only be of use to other hackers curious to see how it works and whether they can use it at a starting point for something more effective.
That isn’t to say that the jailbreak isn’t notable, however. Sony will no doubt be taking an interest already to ensure that no similar security holes are found in more modern versions of the PS5’s software.
If you want to dabble into the jailbreak, or the code itself @SpecterDev has released it over at Github. For instructions on how to use it, Wololo has a nice little tutorial on the subject.
