Although mobile devices are renowned for their endless benefits in many fields, one category emerging with emphasis is that of photography. The end of last year saw Apple vote image-editing app Snapseed as its favorite, and a few months into 2012, Facebook purchased the rampant social image-sharing app Instagram, in hindsight, was a lot easier for Zuck and Co. than trying to compete with it.
Naturally, there’s been a rush in ‘Insta-‘ this and ‘HDR-‘ that apps, as developers look to cash in on the very agreeable snappers vendors are packing into smartphones and tablets. Your typical high-end smartphone now packs an 8-megapixel snapper improved through generations, and although none are in the same league as your DSLRs from Canon, Nikon et al, they’re certainly of a standard point-and-shooters are delighted with.
Process by developer greenlike is rather similar to Snapseed, but in many aspects, actually outperforms one of the Cupertino’s darlings. You can adjust any and every aspect of an image, from blur, brightness and contrast, to vibrance, vignette and white balance, and as you make your modifications, the images change in real-time, right before your eyes. The real-time transformations mean you needn’t practice any trial and error, and every alteration you make can be carried out swiftly and with minimal fuss.
While the likes of Instagram have been slated for devaluing the process of image editing (it’s all one-click, you see), Snapseed and other such apps have yielded praise for providing an extensive map of image-manipulating tools. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not Photoshop, not by a long shot, but it offers a lot more than a cheesy, generic filter.
You can easily undo anything you don’t like, and besides simply moving back a step (or several), every change you make is shown in a convenient, chronological list. Thus, if you decide farther down the line that, in actual fact, the initial modifications you made don’t look quite as good, you’ll easily be able to root out where and when said snag was placed, and amend it.
If you enjoyed Snapseed, you’ll love Process, and although the price tag is rather steep at $9.99, it’s arguably the most powerful image-modding app you’ll find for iOS.
Oh, and it supports the 4-inch display of the new iPhone 5, too.
