Pricing For 12-inch Retina MacBook With 1.3GHz CPU Revealed

Set to launch this coming Friday, April 10th, the new 12-inch Retina MacBook was announced during the recent Spring Forward event at which Apple also released more details about the Apple Watch. Having been rumored as a potential new MacBook Air model, the notebook was instead given the MacBook moniker. The rumors of it having just one port were correct, however.

With the launch of the new MacBook just days away, Apple has given pricing information to its reseller partners, complete with information on any build-to-order options that will also be available. While there won’t be any big additions available for the new machine – no RAM upgrades or additional storage – there will be the option to opt for a faster 1.3GHz CPU which will inevitably also bump the price somewhat.

Based on the information given to reseller Expercom, the stock $1299 entry-level machine that comes with a 1.1GHz Intel Core M CPU, 8GB of memory and a 256GB SSD will be upgradeable to a 1.3GHz chip for an additional $250. The storage and memory will, as previously stated, remain the same.

At the higher end, the stock $1599 model comes with a 1.2GHz CPU, the same 8GB of memory but a larger 512GB of storage. The additional 1.3GHz CPU option adds $150 to that machine’s price, with storage and memory again remaining unchanged.

With that in mind, the pricing and specification options for the 12-inch MacBook are:

  • 1.1 GHz, 256 GB SSD  ($1299)
  • 1.3 GHz, 256 GB SSD ($1549)
  • 1.2 GHz, 512 GB SSD ($1599)
  • 1.3 GHz, 512 GB SSD ($1749)

The new 12-inch machine goes on sale this coming Friday and has taken plenty of flak for that single port, though a high resolution screen, improved keyboard and Force Touch trackpad have proven popular. It’s not cheap though, which means the MacBook Air may still be the best option for many.
