United States President Donald Trump is considering banning TikTok from the United States according to a new report.
Trump confirmed that the banning of TikTok is a possibility while aboard Air Force One, saying that he has “that authority” when discussing the matter.
The White House is concerned about ties between the video social network and the Chinese government with the privacy of US customers being troublesome.
However, a TikTok spokesperson sought to allay any fears. Not only is TikTok popular in the United States, but US data is stored in the country and there is even a fund in place to help US-based creators as well.
“We’ve hired nearly 1,000 people to our US team this year alone, and are proud to be hiring another 10,000 employees into great paying jobs across the U.S.,” the spokesperson said. “Our $1 billion creator fund supports U.S. creators who are building livelihoods from our platform… TikTok U.S. user data is stored in the U.S., with strict controls on employee access.”
Rumors have in the last couple of days suggested that Microsoft is in talks to pick up TikTok, with current own ByteDance also discussing a sale with other companies, too. However, Trump says that he won’t support Microsoft’s buying of TikTok, something that might put potential buyers off picking it up.
