United States President Donald Trump has told Apple that it will not be granted a tariff exception or any relief on Mac Pro parts that are produced in China. And, of course, he announced it via Twitter.
Apple made the previous Mac Pro in the United States but the recently announced, upgraded model will be produced in China. However, with the United States turning the screw on Chinese production via tariffs that leaves Apple in a difficult situation. Some of its products are already faced with a 25% tariff and it was hoping that the Mac Pro would escape unscathed.
After requesting an exclusion on the Mac Pro and other devices earlier this month, it now appears that Apple has its answer. And of course, it isn’t the answer it will have been hoping for.
When making its request for an exemption Apple said that “there are no other sources for this proprietary, Apple-designed component” which clearly didn’t sway the decision. Instead, Trump wants Apple to build the Mac Pro in the United States. The 2013 Mac Pro has been built in Texas ever since it was announced and so far is the only major Apple project to be built in the country.
We shall have to wait and see how this pans out, and it is surely not the end of a matter that neither Trump not Apple will want to back down on. And with the Mac Pro already set to cost an eye-watering amount of money the prospect of its cost increasing because of tariffs isn’t something we like the sound of.
