The announcement of the Galaxy S5 seems like an age ago, but with almost one month having passed since Samsung took the wraps off its latest Android humdinger, we’re now just a couple of weeks from retail. During the past few days, UK carriers Three and Vodafone have offered the all-important details regarding the S5’s pricing and availability on British shores, and now, US-based AT&T has done likewise. For those wishing to tether themselves to a contract with North America’s foremost mobile operator, the Galaxy S5 will be available from April 8th with an up-front cost of $199, and pre-orders are being taken as of now.
As you might expect, Samsung has been trickling out coverage of its upcoming flagship device ever since the announcement at Mobile World Congress back in February, and having already given us a glimpse of what its 16-megapixel rear-facing camera is capable of, only yesterday dropped the Galaxy S5 Experience app, enabling Android users to get a taster of the handset’s assortment of new features.
The Galaxy S5 has proven a polarizing topic within the tech community, and some have been quick to point out the device’s lack of innovation. After all, the idea of offering a gold color option and fingerprint sensor as marquee features doesn’t seem so appealing given that Apple did the exact same thing with the iPhone 5s back in September, and although we’ve been impressed by what we’ve seen of the camera – particularly its 4K video-shooting capabilities – one has to wonder whether the Galaxy S series has lost some of its gusto.
The design isn’t too much of a departure from the preceding Galaxy S4, and in all honesty, the S5 could genuinely struggle against the promising looking successor to the HTC One, which the Taiwanese company is set to showcase next week.
Still, until the Galaxy S5 makes its long-awaited retail, there’s no telling exactly how it will perform, and if you’ve had your heart set on making the purchase ever since Samsung first announced it, then you can pre-order yours right now from AT&T.
As aforementioned, it will become available on April 8th, and if you’re hoping to get hold of the gold color configuration, it would probably be wise to get in there sooner rather than later.
