The story of AirPower is one that just won’t go away, in part because it was one of very few products that Apple announced and then eventually killed before it could ever launch.
The AirPower wireless charger was announced in September of 2017, and then it went away. Apple ultimately killed it off in March of 2019, and we now might have our first look at what it looked like inside.
Shared to bilibli, a new teardown video claims to show an AirPower wireless charger, disassembled. The charger has 14 wireless charging coils that would ensure a device could be placed anywhere and still charge without issue.
There are also multiple layers to this thing, including quite the impressive PCB. The frame of the whole thing looks similar to a keyboard, too. Not That’s likely just an attempt to add rigidity to the charger’s frame while also laying out spaces for chips and whatnot.
Around the back of the AirPower prototype is a Lightning connecter, as you might expect.
When it canceled AirPower, Apple said that it couldn’t make it reach its “high standards” but we’ve heard on multiple occasions in recent months that it might be something Apple is working on once again. Looking at this teardown, it’s clear why the charger had problems – it’s just so ambitious and surely features more tech inside than any other charger.
That, unfortunately, would likely make it quite expensive, too.
