Seldom does one come across a shoot-em-up game with a touch of retro fashioned graphics and playability. The game which normally carries a price tag of $2.99 on the iTunes App Store, can be had for free, and that too for one full week.
Created by Qubit Entertainment, the retro-styled game – Space Qube – with its surreal approach to 8-bits graphics, has been touted by Apple as the App of the Week, hence it has pulled the price on it for a limited period.
Your mission in the game: build the perfect spaceship and start cleaning up the alien infested universe by blowing the threat to smithereens, as you try and gather the best scores in doing so.
The game has won quite a few awards as it impressed critics as well as consumers since it was launched last year in 2013. The game won the ‘Best in Play Award’ at GDC 2013, was a finalist at the ‘Tokyo Game Show Sense of Wonder Night 2013,’ and was declared as the ‘Best of 2013 Indie Game’ in nine countries.
What makes the game stand out from the rest of the crowd, is the "in-game Voxel editor" which lets our heroes create items ranging from a spaceship to a flying toilet or cow, and take them for a spin in space to hunt down some aliens which threaten the entire universe. I wonder if the alien’s AI further improves when being faced with a flying toilet going all "pew pew" on their agenda.
Users also have access to tons of pre-existing models if they wish to quickly get on with some good ol’ alien shooting.
The battles contain some truly unique boss fights at the end of certain levels, and one had better scored high to have ranked up to face these abominations in all their 8-bit glory. The theme music really helps immerse the player into the action as it’s happening, so it does very well in this department.
Space Qube is supported by Game Center, and if you really fall in love with the character that you created with the Voxel editor, you can even get a 3D print of your creation.
