Whenever Apple releases a new version of their mobile operating system, the jailbreak loving public inevitably greet it with a mix of jubilation and hesitation. Investigating the firmware to see what features and upgrades Apple have added is obviously part of the fun, but knowing that they can’t immediately upgrade to it through fear of not being able to jailbreak their device for an indeterminate period of time is the downside of such a situation.
Those seekers of device freedom who happen to own one of Apple’s latest generation mobile devices, namely the new iPad, the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S, have been waiting patiently for the development teams to produce a working and distributable untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1, with the release of 5.1.1 further increasing the stress. Fortunately, French researcher Pod2g likes to keep his public in the loop and following on rather quickly from his video demonstration of a jailbroken iPad 3 running iOS 5.1, he has confirmed via his Twitter account that the latest firmware is susceptible to his gathered exploits.
The public announcement is the essence of simplicity, simply saying that he has encountered no issues in injecting his untether payloads into the latest iPad running the latest firmware. The confirmation is extremely good news for all those who have been sitting on an A5 or A5X device, and it means that anyone who happens to purchase one of these new devices, or has upgraded to the latest firmware without first thinking will not have to live with the consequences for too long.
So there you have it. The news is positive, but it is worth remembering that just because the development teams have it working on their own test devices it doesn’t represent an immediate release to the public. As per his previous tweet, there is still no confirmed date of arrival for the jailbreak 5.1.1 or iOS 5.1, with the production of a nice user-friendly tool from the Chronic Development Team being some weeks away.
As is always the case in these situations, those who are waiting for this release should remain patient and allow those involved to fully test their work and methods so that when it is finally released it is as problem free as is possible. With that said, the countdown is officially on for A5+ freedom.
