Plex has announced additional support for Plex Cloud by allowing users to stream videos from Dropbox, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive. At its inception, Plex Cloud supported streaming of self-hosted videos from Amazon Drive only.
For those who don’t know, Plex Cloud, available as a beta feature to those who pay for a Plex Pass account and are then selected to be part of the testing phase, is part of the Plex media center software which allows users to keep movies, TV shows, photos and music organized and readily accessible from a supported cloud-based solution so that it’s available everywhere all the time.
Normally, users would need to house the data themselves, often using NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices or computers with huge hard disks installed.
That in itself has limited Plex to the hobbyist market, but if a user could store all of their media online and not have to worry about having a computer that is capable of serving the media as well, then Plex Cloud could be the missing link that could allow Plex a route into the living rooms of ‘normal’ people, whoever they are!
Alongside the additional support for more online storage providers, Plex has committed to ironing out some of the problems that people have experienced with Amazon Drive, saying that it is “working hard to resolve the issues, so please stay tuned.” Those problems may be why Plex Cloud’s beta rollout has stalled somewhat, though the company does promise to allow more people into the program from December 5th.
Whilst storing media online does sound like a great way of saving disk space locally, the questionable sources some people use for that media may prove problematic when pushing movies and TV shows onto servers owned by Amazon, Google and Dropbox. Most cloud service providers have conditions surrounding pirated material, so if not all of your videos are of public domain shows, you might want to keep that in mind.
