Play Backwards Compatible Xbox 360 Games On Xbox One, Here’s How

There’s a big emphasis in the video-gaming community at the moment placed on backwards compatibility. We know that Microsoft’s Xbox One console now supports backwards-compatibility for approximately 100 classic Xbox 36o titles. We also know that Sony is in the process of bringing PlayStation 2 emulation to its PlayStation 4 console to allow iconic titles from yesteryear to be enjoyed. But if you have an Xbox One, and own some of the supported Xbox 360 games, just how do you get up and running?

We take a look at how that can be done in a step-by-step guide.

Note: This guide assumes your Xbox One is already updated to the latest NXOE (November 2015) update. If you haven’t already, you can learn more on how to get it right now here.

For digital purchases:

Step 1: First and foremost, you’ll need to log onto the Xbox One and head over to the My games & apps section. As you would expect, this is where all of your Xbox One titles are found.

Step 2: The main interface will show the Xbox One titles that have been purchased. Scroll all the way to the right of the interface. All previous digitally purchased Xbox 360 titles will be accessible in the same section.

It is important to note here that only those Xbox 360 games that have been previously purchased digitally, and found in the official backwards-compatibility list here will be available in this section.

Step 3: Click on the icon of the game the you wish to play and it will start downloading to your Xbox One console.

Step 4: When the game has been queued and ultimately downloaded, it will show up in the main interface of the My games & apps section. It can then be selected and executed as normal.

For physical discs:

If you have a physical hard copy of a supported Xbox 360 title, then simply insert the disc into the Xbox One. The interface will provide a prompt asking you to download the game onto the device. Once it has been downloaded, you’re good to go, but keep in mind that you’ll always need to have the disc in the Xbox One to play those titles.

So there you have it. Microsoft may not have made every single Xbox 360 title compatible with the Xbox One console yet, but with more than 100 classic titles available, there’s definitely hours of fun and nostalgic entertainment to be had. It’s likely that additional titles will be supported as we move forward, but for now, head over to the My games & apps section on your Xbox One and get up and running with those iconic titles.
