If you continually keep your ear to the ground in the hope of learning more about the comings and goings at Apple Inc., including what the company may be working on internally, then you’ll probably be aware that the Cupertino-based company has been working in stealth on a reality TV show around apps for some time now.
We now know that the TV show in question will be called “Planet of the Apps“, and that Apple is billing the creation as a “groundbreaking new series about apps and their creators”. In short, Apple is working on a reality TV show that will give a curated selection of app developers the chance to showcase and promote their apps in the hope of finding “the next great app.”
Apple has published a Planet of the Apps website that contains a little bit more information about what they are looking for from potential contestants.
Executives in charge of the casting for the series are looking for 100 developers to not only showcase the iOS, tvOS, macOS or watchOS app experience that they have been working on, but also to pitch for the opportunity to receive hands-on guidance from a range of influencers in the tech community, as well as the potential to receive a featured status on the relevant App Store and funding from top-tier VC investors.
From the sounds of it, it looks as though Apple is planning on creating some original programming that will not only appeal to viewers and developers around the world, but that will also give the company the opportunity to show the world how developers are using the updated development tools and technologies in the respective software platforms to build cutting-edge app experiences.
Not only will the show give leading developers the chance to get guidance from the experts, but the website also stipulates that there’s “up to $10 million” available in the form of investment from “top-tier VCs.”
Other than what’s on the website, there’s little else known about things like the format of Planet of the Apps, or exactly which Apple executives will be part of the programming. Applications are currently being accepted right now for the series and will run through to August 26, 2016. Filming is expected to happen in Los Angeles in late 2016/early 2017 in collaboration with the production company known as Propagate. As always, if any additional information becomes known we will be sure to bring it to you right away.
