Photos Of PS4 Slim Leak Out, Launching Next Month Alongside PlayStation Neo

It looks as though Sony has ambitions to introduce more than just the PlayStation Neo during its upcoming media event on September 7.

The Japanese company has already announced the PlayStation event for next month, where it’s widely expected to take the covers off the PlayStation Neo console, which is likely to be a direct competitor to Microsoft’s Xbox One S. Now, a set of new images that have become available via an online auction site suggest that the company may also introduce a slimmer version of the existing PlayStation 4 hardware, a PS4 Slim.

The images show a PlayStation 4 console that features a noticeably thinner design and rounded edges that all add up to a smaller and more lightweight PS4. The outer packaging shown in the images suggests that the internal console will ship with a 500GB hard drive, with additional images showing that it will be finished in a matte Jet Black, which would make it look visually the same as the existing PlayStation 4 from an external aesthetic perspective.

Sony’s September 7 event, which will be held in New York, is expected to predominantly focus on the PlayStation Neo, and will likely feature the PlayStation team showing off the technical capabilities of the new hardware that, according to Sony Executive Andrew House, will “sit alongside” the existing PlayStation 4 rather than actually replace it entirely.

This latest leak now also suggests that the PS4 range will be bolstered by a thinner, redesigned version of the original hardware.

Additional reports on the subject are suggesting that Sony has plans to introduce the Neo, as well as this second console, during next month’s media event to try and broaden the overall appeal of the PS4 experience. Microsoft has obviously gained additions popularity with the release of the Xbox One S, meaning Sony rightly wants to hold onto its majority market share, and likely sees these two console introductions as a means of doing just that.

Images also show this purported PS4 Slim being compared to the original console side-by-side, which clearly shows the PS4 Slim being reduced by almost half the mass of its older sibling.

While the PlayStation range has been a true success for the Japanese giant, it appears that the revamped console, as well as the titles that the company produces for the platform, are only part of Sony’s gaming puzzle. The company has recently announced that it will follow in the footsteps of Nintendo by producing mobile games for devices running iOS and Android, but only for the Asian market.

All in all, a ton to look forward to, and it certainly makes next month’s event an exciting one.
