It’s not often we write about music here at Redmond Pie, but we’re changing that today after the release of a new app called PageTurn. The app, created by developer and musician Stephen Coyle, allows the turning of pages in sheet music or any PDF using nothing more than a facial expression.
PageTurn uses the TrueDepth camera system that makes Memoji and Face ID work on the iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and the 2018 iPad Pro. Using the technology the app watches a user’s expression and then turns the page of a PDF accordingly. Those expressions can include mouth actions or a wink. If you’re using your mouth, you can move it to the right to move forward a page, or to the left to go backwards. Winks are based on whether you use your left or right eye to wink, with pages turned accordingly.
PageTurn lets you turn pages of sheet music (or any document) hands-free, using facial gestures.
Using your mouth or eyes to gesture, you can turn pages without taking your hands away from the instrument. Unlike some other hands-free solutions, PageTurn requires no additional hardware like pedals, and works with any PDF. PageTurn uses Apple’s ARKit for efficient and extremely accurate tracking.
The use case of PageTurn is fairly obvious. Musicians who need to turn pages of music while playing can benefit greatly from this app, with them no longer needing to remove their hands from their instruments in order to see the next round of notes they need to play.
The app itself isn’t a complicated one, but that’s the beauty of it. It doesn’t need to do much, but the thing it does do is super helpful to those who need it. If you’re a musician then it’s got to be worth picking this up for either iPhone or iPad, and it won’t break the bank at a super reasonable $2.99, either.
