Apple has today seeded its first beta build of OS X 10.10.4 Yosemite. Coming just a week after the public release of OS X 10.10.3, the new beta has the build number 14E7f and can be downloaded from Apple’s Mac Dev Center.
Having only just hit the wires, we don’t know yet just what new changes have been made under the hood of OS X 10.10.4, though the release notes for the new beta mention that it “improves the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac.” The last round of betas brought with them new features such as iCloud Photo Library and the replacement for iPhoto, Photos. At the moment we have no real indication that this new beta has anything of similar significance in it although we don’t want to play down the importance of stability and compatibility fixes.
With the release of this first beta build of OS X 10.10.4, Apple continues its breakneck update schedule for both the Mac and iOS platforms. The company has come in for criticism of late due to the rate at which it is churning out new versions of its operating systems, and with the Apple Watch on the horizon it’s possible that yet another cog will be added to a software machine that is starting to creek already. Can Apple continue to push updates at this rate, with big revisions every twelve months? That’s a debate that will continue to rumble on.
If you’re a developer and do download the new build right away, make sure to take all the usual precautions such as not using your main machine or at the very least installing OS X 10.10.4 on an external drive.
You just never know what these betas are going to do!
