Following hot on the footsteps of the official OS X 10.8.1 release to the public via the Mac App Store today, Apple has now pushed out the first developer seed of OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion to registered developers on the Mac Dev Center. Build number 12C31a is now available to download through the official Mac Dev Center for those who are registered, a release that will see developers acting as guinea pigs for us all in order to report and iron out any bugs that may exist.
It may come as a surprise to some that Apple has not only released the public build of OS X 10.8.1 to those who have purchased Mountain Lion through the Mac App Store, but also seeded the next developer build almost immediately. The current developer build of OS X obviously has a different focus than the previous seeds with Apple advising in their release notes that the new version will concentrate on improvements to the Messages app, Facebook integration, Game Center, the Safari web browser and the all new Reminders app.
Apple has also stipulated that they are aware of no known issues with the release, although I am pretty sure some keen eyed developers will be happy to rifle through the installation and manage to report some bugs back to Apple to improve upon. The release is also a combination build, meaning that it will automatically take 10.8 and 10.8.1 users automatically up to 10.8.2, without the ability to roll back without a full restore or a new installation.
The public release of 10.8.1 brought with it a number of small, but nevertheless important updates to users, including ironing out some issues with Exchange Mail and rectifying some issues with Audio transportation through Thunderbolt connections. The release notes that have been included with this latest developer build should give Mountain Lion users some hope that the next public release will hopefully bring some notable changes to the operating system, including the much anticipated inclusion of Facebook sharing throughout.
It’s widely been speculated on that Mountain Lion won’t get public Facebook integration until the release of iOS 6, allowing the Facebook partnership to be rolled out across both platforms in one go. If that rumor has any substance to it, then we could expect a 10.8.2 public release around September 12th.
